This project's goal was to be inspired by the design work made during the modern movement in America starting in the 1930's. More specifically the magazine covers and spreads of Harper's Bazaar with the art direction of Alexey Brodovitch. I was particularly inspired by the covers using overlays and the spreads that mirrored the type to the images.
I chose the online platform She Explores because of their amazing content and the inspiration the work brings me. All the articles featured in this zine are from She Explores, along with most of the images. Articles in this zine include (in order) Amanda Sandlin: At Wild Woman, Seeking Answers in the Void: A Reflection on Introversion + Extroversion in Travel, and Hannah Perrine Mode. The last spread includes image's directly from Hannah's site.
With this time period in mind I also wanted to play with the issues of sexism, whether it be in design, fashion, or today in the outdoor industry. Amanda's work set the stage for the layout with the illustrations of a female never showing her face paired with her wild hair. This compared to the covers and spreads of the 30-50's and even today show a stark difference. Using a magenta overlay I wanted to highlight this comparison.
